7 1/4 inches x 5 3/4 inches x 4 1/8 inches. Rare antique cast bronze clad single hand painted bookend by the famous Pompeian Bronze Company circa 1922. Rich, deep, hand painted teal, with original fiery copper bronze patina visible on the head and nose. Pompeian, along with it’s contemporaries Marion, Armor and Galvano Bronze made bookends in the 1920’s through 1930’s by a method that was very time consuming and expensive that they have yet to be falsified or duplicated. These pieces are highly prized by serious collectors. They would dip a plaster mold into a galvanizing metal solution until bronze clad by long, metal wicks in the bases. When bronze clad, they cut off the wicks, leaving telltale depressions in the bottoms of the bases with the remnants of the wicks similar to this piece as shown in the photographs. In this particular piece Buddha is shown in his traditional lotus sitting position with the metal head covering and loose robe. The artistry of this piece is definitely remarkable; This is a museum quality bookend. Kuritzky, in his antique bookend reference guide, “The Encyclopedia of Bookends”, page 40, Plate 47, gives these pieces a rarity grading. The Pompeian Bronze Company started out as Galvano Bronze, the first commercially produced art metal industry in the US. Pompeian continued in business through the end of the 1920’s creating beautifully plated and painted Art Nouveau style bookends using permanent mold, solid white metal casings.
