The firm changed ownership among family members, and company names changed for a century as the company evolved into the J. In the first decade of 1900, the company began to produce a decorative and ornate metal arts line of high-quality sand castings in iron, brass and bronze mediums. Some items produced included bookends, book racks, and inkwells which were produced between 1910 and the late 1930s. This is an early 1920s impeccably conditioned Antique Brass/Bronze Original JUDD USA Letter or Book Holder. This is, by far, the most beautifully conditioned original model Ive ever seen. This letter/book holder when found (these are VERY hard to come by these days) is ALWAYS heavily tarnished, without vibrancy, and monotone in matte, dull complexion. This is the only model I have come across in my research that looks as it was intended to look that looks as it did many years ago when it was made. It is, in my mind, a stunning time capsule.. Having beautifully stood up to the test of time. This JUDD 1920s work of art is solid brass/bronze in material composition. It features a Native American Indian War Chief with an ornate and feathered headdress on both sides of the letter holder. This is where you will see the STUNNING high vibrancy brass/bronze at play. Again, I highly encourage you to do some research of your own. What you will find is that every time this piece is pictured, the chief at the sides is totally matte and dull in appearance. You will NOT find this original model boasting high vibrancy, bright, very reflective brass/bronze sides shown here. The Native American Chief Warrior in Headdress is unbelievably detailed. Take note of the finite etchings in each and every feather on the headdress, and the wrinkles in the chiefs face! Behind the chief is a wavy deep gold hued brass/bronze background. Within that squared background, at the upper left, the JUDD hallmark of the snake. At the bottom right, another JUDD identifier. The rest of the sides of this letter/book holder, aside from the squared centerpiece focal point, is beautifully ornate. The sides look like that of an old world bridge of sorts – 3-Dimensional 1920s Art Deco in style. Note the stunning symmetry of the brass/bronze art deco design, the finite scale of detail in the checkered/ circled/ and abstract shapes depicted. Even in the interior of the brass/bronze letter/book holder beautiful Art Deco design is at play, with the bottom piece of the interior bearing an ornate raised brass/bronze abstract symmetrical engraving. This piece is VERY heavy given its solid brass/bronze composition. It would make the perfect bookend. Could also be used as a paperweight, or (of course) as a stunning letter holder – a beautiful edition to your desk top. Serial Number 6701 in several places at the bottom – certifying authenticity as an original 1920s JUDD piece.
