FEATURED: A stunning pair of beautiful, serene Egyptian Sphinx figural bookends, beautiful twins yet each having its own distinct designs on the platform it’s resting on, made in the early part of the Twentieth Century, when the Egyptian Revival craze was still so hot and sleek Art Deco-influenced figures like these were all the rage. These solid metal (we believe they are bronze but not tested) Sphinx figures have graceful, beautifully cast bodies of lions, headdresses of Pharaohs, and androgynous regal human faces, with slight variations in the lion forms, making each wonderfully its own being. We see on the two base platforms unique designs also, with Bendety, the Egyptian Winged Sun, in the center of one, lotus plants on either side, and on the other base platform we see a pyramid, what appears to be a winding road in the desert, and some mysterious geometric figures in the center and left side- this will be up to their new owner to solve these hieroglyphics! Sphinx figures have been around for thousands of years, offering spiritual protection and acting as guardians to their owners and homes, and these gorgeous creatures, with their wonderful detailed look, with continue to offer protection to their new owner and home, we feel certain. They were much loved and used in their former library, acting both as bookends on the master’s desk and as protectors to the space. We don’t know who created these, or the foundry that cast them so wonderfully, as they are not marked/stamped anywhere. We could not find them online anywhere at all. These are so wonderful as bookends, whether one owns ten books or ten thousand, but should you be a digital/kindle reader and not have books for these to protect, they would be equally great as your bedside Dream World guides and protectors, perhaps. They are striking, very rare, and fabulous, no matter what they end up as in their new home, certainly. MEASURES: 7 3/8 inches across, 4.25 inches high, and 1.25 inches deep, with great three-dimensional details in each figure. These were made as a pair, we feel sure, but also made with uniqueness to each, rather than carbon copies of each other, and made, we think of bronze, solid of course, but have not tested the metal for that. Each one is slightly different in weight, one being 2.8 pounds, the other 3.1 pounds, but both the same size if put back to back. We have only dusted each to reveal details and be able to photograph these in their gorgeousness, and have left the original patina, spots, oxidation, slight scratches, scrapes & surface soiling as we found them, as some collectors want all the honest history on their items left alone. Age & use normal slight wear are noted and to be expected, as these were really used for many decades in a personal library. It is hoped that this pair, as Egyptian Sphinx, will offer their new owner and home the same wonderful spiritual protection and guardianship that they gave to their original owner, and that they will be something to be cherished for years ahead, and then passed down to someone to continue their life as beautiful bookends and protectors.
