Rare Vintage Antique JB Hirsch Art Deco Harlequin Bookend #2
This Art Deco bookend figurine is from the 1920’s to early 1930’s – romantic, elaborate, and elegantly designed. The little harlequin is cast in bronze and cold painted in gold for her glamorous costume and ivory for her flesh. The figure is in great condition with just some paint loss on her hands. Her painted face with its bright blue eyes and a cupid’s bow mouth is dramatically tipped up as if in a spotlight. She’s gracefully perched atop a column of layered and carved, white onyx marble which is also in very good condition (only minor wear noted) layered and carved, and covered on the bottom with a felt pad. This statuette bookend was produced by the New York Art Bronze Works in Manhattans lower east side. The founder of the company, Romanian metalsmith, Joseph B. Hirsch, began in the early 1900s acquiring sculptural molds from French, German and Italian foundries, and he eventually assembled the finest and rarest collection of Beaux Arts, Nouveau and Deco sculptural molds in the world. From these he produced the Art Deco bookends and figural pieces that have made him famous even today. The Art Deco style of combining bronze with ivory for the flesh features had to be modified when ivory was banned and metals were required for the World War effort. Celluloid or paint replaced ivory, and often, spelter replaced bronze. I’m offering a matching bookend (#1) separately. 6″ tall Base measures about 3.75″ square Weighs 2 lbs.
