(Please read entire listing carefully, especially Description and Condition portions). RARE ANTIQUE Galvano Bronze Tarrant Bookends OLYMPIAN Swimmer GERTRUDE EDERLE. Up for sale is this VERY sought-after set of bookends. Per the description of a previously listed item: “Maid in Surf” is the title for this set in the Galvano Bronze catalogue. Surely, it is Gertrude Ederle, gold medal winner at the 1924 Paris Olympics, and then first woman to swim the English Channel which she accomplished in 1926. That would suggest these date to 1927 or so. Bronze-clad, a manufacturing process by which a skin of bronze was deposited on a plaster form by electro-plating. A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900s to make decorative household objects that had the look, feel, and heft of solid bronze yet were affordable by the middle class. One piece bears the foil label Galvano Bronze The SC Tarrant Co, Inc. These actually were 2 separate companies. Mori & Son, established in 1889, used the trade name Galvano Bronze, which was adopted by some as the generic name for pieces made in this manner (sort of like Kleenex being used as a general name for facial tissue). SC Tarrant themselves also made pieces via electro-forming. Tarrant operated in the Greater NYC area in the 20’s, went out of business in the early 30s. While the details of their relationship are interesting to me, they are beside the point in terms of the age and authenticity of these remarkable, and rare, bookends. This is a MUST HAVE for your collection! DON’T MISS OUT! 8.5″ Long 4″ Tall. Galvano Bronze Tarrant Label on bottom. The felt on the bottom of one is loose.
