This is a stunning set of 1920’s bookends from Rookwood Pottery. These pieces are done in a brown marbled matte finish and feature a sleek panther design. The base of the pieces are marked with the backwards RP Rookwood logo and XXIV for 1924, the date of production for the piece. The pieces are also signed with the artist’s mark on the back, William Purcell McDonald. Rookwood Pottery was founded in 1880 in Cincinnati, Ohio by Maria Longworth Nichols Storer. The pottery was notable not only for their quality ceramics, but their employment of women in a mostly male-dominated workforce. The artist of this particular piece, William Purcell McDonald, was employed with Rookwood starting in 1882 at the age of 18. He continued to produce pieces for the pottery until his death in 1930, and his daughter was also employed there, starting in 1913. These pieces are in beautiful (almost) antique condition, with a noted chip on the back base of one bookend, and some mild paint loss on the front base of one bookend.
