PAIR Antique German Porcelain Pierrot French Art Deco Clown Bookends. Hello from FANCY ENDEAVOURS (previously savvyspyglasstreasures)! Here is a stunning set of bookends from Germany. They were made in Thuringia, Germany by Porzellanfabrik Unger, Schneider & Cie. (1859 until 1885) or some other configuration of the company of that period. I believe these lovely bookends date to the latter part of this period. This porcelain factory seemed to have gone through quite a few name transitions and leaders in the 1880’s. These gorgeous figural bookends are marked on the base, next to the pretty floral swags on the side opposite the clown is facing, Germany 16984 Factory symbol of a two-headed. Arrow thru the G Dep. These lovely French clowns or Pierrot harlequins are sitting similarly on the ground with their backs against the wall of the bookend. They, however, have a different sitting position and slightly different costumes. The details are finely painted. Wonderful treasure you NEED to commandeer for yourself or your loved one! These gorgeous antique bookends are in excellent condition with no chips or cracks! 5 1/2″ x 3″ x 5 tall each. The name “Fancy Endeavours” came to me as I searched for ways to convey my love for the art and products of human enterprise in a smaller, easy to remember title. From music, architecture, and paintings, to ceramics, jewelry, modes of transportation, clothing and accessories, to the little gadgets you see in “As Seen on TV” ads and everything in between; the things we create and have created in the past to make our lives easier and more beautiful are evidence of free human endeavor and a tangible connection to man’s history of advancement. Navy experience, love of all things nautical, and by the popularity of “Pirates of the Caribbean” Disneyland ride and the movies. This disturbing trend will not survive. However, I wish to do my part to celebrate and remind anyone who does happen upon my little corner of the internet that without man’s creativity, our lives would be bleak and hard beyond imagining. And, really, why shouldn’t these talented and creative people, and those like me that find them afterwards, profit from our efforts? However, they were made by their creators for the purpose and intention of making lives (theirs and ours) easier and/or more beautiful. I passionately adore free enterprise in all its forms. I hope you will enjoy these offerings of “Fancy Endeavours” and what they represent!
