Original bronze-clad Dante “Ex Cathedra” sculpture hand painted bookends circa 1920’s, antique-vintage. These are spectacular in real life. They have aged beautifully. There’s a lot of depth and detail to them. The pair depict a pensive Dante Alighieri and they still show most of their original polychrome handpainting in gold and maroon. They will patina over time if left alone and not cleaned if you prefer the patina look. These are original bronze-clad, therefore are solid throughout and do not have a cavity at the bottom. You can see the wire at the bottom from the extensive bronze-cladding process. In addition to the aging, one of them at an angle shows a variation in color on the back, almost like a water mark — see last photo. But this does not detract at all. 5.75″ W x 6.5″ H x 4 D, measured at longest points. Hefty Weight: Each one weighs approx. 3lbs-11oz; totals about 7lbs-6oz. Book props are not included.
