Single Vintage Cowan Art Pottery Bookend Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage Cowan Ohio art deco pottery bookend. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This design is known as a “Unicorn” and the reddish-orange glaze is known as Oriental Red. There are dark brown splotches here and there in the glaze, mostly near the bottom. The base has an old green felt covering. This item measures approximately 7 1/4 inches tall, 6 inches long, and 4 1/8 inches wide. Unpacked, it weighs 1 pound 12.3 ounces. This would be a neat addition to a collection of American art pottery. Identification This bookend was designed by Waylande Gregory for Cowan pottery. The flat side of the bookend has impressed markings, as shown in Photos 3 and 4. Condition This piece looks good overall, with no chips or cracks. Variations in glazing are as made. There is a dark line along the side of the unicorn’s front leg on one side; under 14X magnification, this looks like it may be a pencil marking (please see Photo 2). The groove where the unicorn’s horn attaches to its rear end also has what appears to be a short, dark firing fissure, as made, which is annealed (also visible in Photo 2); I also examined this under 14X magnification.
