RARE, STUNNING pair of MINT condition, large, antique, 1931 Art Deco bookends designed by Godefridus Boonekamp and made by the Plateelbakkerij Schoonhoven Ceramic Company in Schoonhoven, Netherlands. This pair of glossy white ceramic bookends, each depicting a nude, muscular man in various pushing positions, is displayed on a typical Art Deco style geometric base. They each measure 8″ in length, 11 1/2″ in height and 6 in width. They have been depicted on page 36 in the book, “Plateelbakkerij Schoonhoven anno1920″ and are both signed with a press stamp. Plateelbakkerij Schoonhoven started in 1920 with the production of fine ceramics. The ceramics were then fired in peat kilns and painted by hand. The production mainly consisted of decorative goods. In 1923, the factory made commissioned pottery for the first time. On the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of Queen Wilhelmina’s reign, Plateelbakkerij Schoonhoven produced a richly decorated commemorative vase. Schoonhoven has made a name for itself at home and abroad. The decors that adorn the pottery are particularly praised. The company attaches great importance to the artistic quality of its products. There are special Art Nouveau and Art Deco designs. Tijs Visser, together with his father-in-law and brother-in-law, founded Plateelbakkerij Schoonhoven in 1920. It is truly a wonder to find a nearly 100 year old piece such as this in MINT condition! Note: Books not included with bookends!
